“All Men Are Created Equal”
This year I’m in AP Lang. A writing based college english class. Down below is one of my essays I have written in this class and trust me it is not my best work. I kid you not academic writing is not a strong suit of mine, but I’m working on it. I had 45 minutes to write this mini essay, so be gentle on me!

The “Declaration of Independence” has an effective argument because of the bold accusations made and the charming use of rhetorical skills to put the nail in the coffin.
The “Declaration of Independence” was extremely important because it showed America finally standing up to the tyranny that mother Britain forced upon the colonists Thomas Jefferson wrote “that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” ( Jefferson 7-9). Jefferson continues to write stating “governments are instituted among men, deriving their powers from the consent of the governed” (Jefferson 10-11). Jefferson’s accusations were a slap in the face to Britain. The taxation without representation was root of many problems that were force upon the colonist, by mother Britain. Britain time and time again had the colonist paying for the trouble they caused with others, but with this declaration Jefferson is convincing the people that the government drives from the consent of those who vote. If the government is corrupt they can over thrown because the government is for the people, by the people.
The declaration use of rhetoric helped, by highlighting everything in bold that Britain has done to wrong the colonist. Some of the most use writing tactics Jefferson used was repetition, pathos, biblical allusion and imagery. Jefferson stated “He refused his assent laws…He has forbidden his governors to pass laws… He refused to pass other laws” (Jefferson 29-33) Jefferson continues his verbal assault for another 45 lines. Jefferson does not hold back with the accusations he is addressing in those lines because this is where he will catch not only the eye of the colonists, but the thoughts of the colonists as well. He will bring the colonist on his side through emotions laced with logic. Jefferson will use the list of complaints to win the colonists and in conclusion win their hearts over to his side. America’s side.
